Weather Camp

Middle school and high school students experience fun and research in the summertime at our Howard University Beltsville Campus during Weather Camp.  During the day’s events, students in grades 9-12 have the chance to participate in hands-on scientific experiments in areas of interest to NASA. Events like dissertation discussion chapter are rather popular between our students.

Weather camp for high school was developed under the NOAA- Center for Atmospheric Science program and later expanded as part of BCCSO. These camps are targeted towards high school sophomore through senior level students and afford them the opportunity to learn about basic weather systems and forecasting techniques as well as the impact of climate and catastrophic weather events.
 
Students also take part in small group discussions with experts in weather-related fields, conduct meteorological observations and experiments, and visit government and private sector organizations involved in the delivery of weather information to the public. In addition, students have the opportunity to enhance their non-technical skills, such as oral and written communication, enhance effective participation in teamwork, and preview steps involved in the college application process.
 
BCCSO plans to expand Weather Camp so that it better utilizes the scientific technologies and resources at the Beltsville lab to inspire campers with richer, more experiential leaning activities.
